An example of a Surf Map

Surfing is a mod that originated on Counter-Strike, and has since become popular on Team Fortress 2, CS:GO and CS:S. Surfing involves strafing into slanted walls (commonly referred to as 'ramps'), causing the player to accelerate rapidly and reach an extremely high velocity. When the player reaches the end of the ramp, their velocity is retained. This allows the player to perform large jumps that would normally be impossible. Surf maps will usually require the player to navigate a series of ramps by performing jumps of varying difficulty.

In order for the player to surf on a ramp and maneuver themself through the air during a jump, sv_airaccelerate must be increased from the default value of 10. Most surf servers set this to 150, trick surf servers often set it to 1000. This changes how fast the player can turn without losing velocity. This can either be changed through SourceMod, or launch options via +sv_airacceleration .

Basics

Ramps

Surf Ramps are slanted walls which a player must strafe against using the A or D keys. This is also how a player must get to the end of a map. Surf ramps can loop, curve or slant in almost any direction. Usually, the W key is never used, because upon its trigger, it causes the player to instantly lose traction with the surf ramp, and thus slide downwards. Surf ramps will often end sending the player flying through the air into another Surf ramp, and through this the player can get around the map, often reaching high speeds.

Gaining Speed

A typical Speedup/Slowdown ramp

Gaining Speed is important to navigating the surf map. Players can gain speed by sliding down to the lower parts of the ramp while surfing on a Surf ramp, and by falling to new Surf ramps. Certain areas on Surf ramps may provide the player with a speedup, while others may provide a slowdown. These ramps will often come in pairs, requiring skillful navigation to pass the correct one.

Spawn

BLU and RED Spawns may be as close or as far away from each other as possible. They will often start at a high point of a a Surf ramp, allowing the player to gain a lot of speed before flying to the next ramp. Forgiving maps may respawn a player here if they fall off too early. In most maps you also have 5 seconds protection, when you spawn again after death. This gives you a chance to either kill intruders, or get safely back to the ramps again.

End

Whenever a player reaches the specified End to the map, a player can usually be teleported to a multitude of places. These places could be the top of jail, where one may be able to score frags, unique locations that contain specific reward triggers, or a variety of other places. Some servers will tell the whole server that the player has reached the end.

Jail

A Surf Jail, this one being Arena based

A notable part of a combat surf map is the Jail. Whenever a player strays away from the surf ramps or falls onto the map floor, they are most likely to end up in jail. Jails can usually be operated in different spots, but are most often situated where the opposing team is able to kill victims, or an arena like area, often in a remote place. Commonly, there is a kill button (that kills everyone instantly or over time) and a free button that opens an exit, allowing players to continue surfing on the regular map.

Obstacles

Skill maps have obstacles to prevent the player from surfing directly to the finish. The obstacles may require the player to keep as much speed as possible, or to navigate through a series of walls via air strafing.Obstacles may include:

Since bunny hopping to preserve speed is not possible in TF2 without any modification, some developers have created plugins for SourceMod to replicate bunny hopping.

Map Types

Combat/Death-Match

Combat/Death-Match Surf maps are maps that usually have a jail or central region where players gather and battle. These maps may have an end where you would gain an advantage over players in the jail area or central region. Combat/Death-Match surf maps may also have checkpoints where you would gain some advantage over players. In some cases, these combat maps may contain an area overlooking an area to give Snipers a height advantage over players. Occasionally, combat surf maps may have secrets where you would receive a 'special treatment', such as access to places where you could easily kill.

Combat/Death-Match surf maps usually contain Control Points where players can capture and win the round, or the Control Point could be for the gamemode King of the Hill. There are often many 'stopping points' in which there is normal flat terrain to battle on, often also containing control points.

Skill

Skill Surf maps are purely surfing, and as such have little or no fighting. Maps greatly range in difficulty and usually contain no 'jail' or central region. These maps promote techniques of surfing, for example, to keep speed and quick air strafing. These maps may contain spins, bunny hops, and jumps from ramp to ramp or ramp to platforms. There are 2 types of skill surf maps:

  • Staged skill maps
  • Linear skill maps

Staged skill maps are skill maps with stages or checkpoints in between the whole surf. The stages may have their own theme and style of surfing.

Linear skill maps are skill maps without stages or stops in between the whole surf. These maps may be as short as 30 seconds, or as long as 3 minutes. You basically surf from start to end, hence linear.

There is a variant called a staged linear map, shown by Panzer in his map surf_eternal. The whole surf itself is linear, but if you fail on one of the 'stages', you will usually be sent back to a place where you can either select which 'stage' you want to continue on.

Trick Surf

Trick Surf is where you surf around the map performing a series of tricks. Tricks may include surfing backwards or sideways, wraps, or a series of jumps and air strafes. A 'wrap' is where you wrap around a segment of a surf ramp one or more times. The skill level of trick surf can be compared to skill surfing, but the skill varies around each trick.

The Way to find Surf Maps

Surf maps can easily be found. When you open up TF2, you have to go to Servers, and write 'surf_' down in the Map section. There's a lot of different maps to choose, and some of them are more surfing than others. But when you have found the one you like, you simply connect to the server and choose a team.

Strategies

  • Maps may be hard at first, but practice makes perfect. Keep at these maps and you will eventually reach the end.
  • When surfing on combat maps, use your speed to throw off the enemy. Jumping off ramps and firing at enemies, then landing again can help greatly. You can surf sideways to help yourself aim.
  • Some maps require you to navigate through some obstacles. To help, try to envision your route before air strafing.
  • There is no required way to surf one map, try every route you find!
  • Keep note that there may be unexpected things while surfing, situations like negative gravity! Explore what you can do with any map feature.
  • There may be areas where you can telehop (teleport hopping). It is where you can keep the amount of velocity you have by entering a teleport which sends you to a location, usually by bunny hopping.
  • Speed boosts can be essential to navigating a course correctly, as not having enough speed often means you cannot get to the next Surf ramp. Avoiding slowdowns is important due to this.
  • Some Surf Map ends provide a teleport into the enemy spawn. Use this to rack up loads of kills on unsuspecting foes!
  • Survival is key when you reach the end and get teleported to a fragging area. If you die here, you will have to repeat the entire course again!
  • On Combat Surf, it is important to keep your spawn protected and your team dominating the jail, otherwise the other team will most likely see the opportunity and spend the round's time spawn and/or jail camping for free kills. It's your team or theirs.

What Is Cs Go Surfing

Ever wanted to become a pro surfer or became curious what those surf maps are all about? With this article we will look at the basics of surfing as well as some pro tips that can make you a better surfer.

How To Join A Csgo Surfing Server

  1. The first step will be to find a surf server. One with a tic rate of 100 or greater is optimal. If you can't find a good surf map, or if you want to practice, make a LAN server game.
  2. You will want to set your sv_accelerate to 10 in your console
  3. The following are the available sv_airaccelerate options and their difficulties
    • Hard: sv_airaccelerate 100
    • Semi hard: sv_airaccelerate 150
    • Medium: sv_airaccelerate 200
    • Easy: sv_airaccelerate 400
    • Fun: sv_airaccelerate 800
    • Extra easy: sv_airaccelerate 1000
  4. Some popular surf maps include surf_greatriver, surf_fruits/vegetables, Rebel Resistance, or Legends.
  5. The objective of surf maps is to properly maneuver yourself throughout the various obstacles/ramps/stages on the map (ramps will look like floating ramps resembling an inverted V [/]).
  6. You will want to familiarize yourself with the strafe keys. Those are the A and D keys on the keyboard.
  7. Once you jump onto a ramp, you will want to strafe right (D key) if you're on the left side of the ramp, or strafe left (A key) if you're on the right side of the ramp. A popular way to remember this is to use this visual symbol D/A. While doing this, you will want to keep your mouse pointed in the direction you want your player to travel.
  8. While surfing on a ramp, you want to avoid
pressing the forward key (W). Pressing the forward key will make you
immediately start to slide off of the ramp you're surfing on.
  9. In most cases you want to avoid pressing the backwards key (S). The only plausible situations of using the S key are to stop your mid-air flight, such as attempting to land on a pedestal or obstacle. After you hit the S key, you will immediately start to fall vertically. While looking down, your landing spot will be your crosshair. After hitting the S key, you can still maneuver yourself with the strafe keys.
  10. The most difficult maneuvers to perform are turning while surfing. Ideally, you want to wait until you are in mid-air and then strafe in the direction you want to turn (again this is A for going left, or D for going right). At the same time, you want to smoothly and synchronously change direction with your mouse in a centripetal fashion and aim it towards the direction you wish to travel. Once you reach maximum velocity in the
desired direction you want to go, stop strafing. Another popular tactic is to flick your mouse towards the direction you're want to move to.
  11. To pick up speed, start at the top of the ramp and move downwards. You want to keep your mouse movements at a minimal unless attempting to change direction.
  12. Another aspect that can be hard for beginners is to make sure that you don't lose speed when jumping from one ramp to another. This can be done by reducing the amount of force that your z-axis experiences to a minimal.
  13. When you have just left a ramp and have to directional turn to land on another ramp, a smart strategy is to land near the top of the next ramp while immediately hitting the proper strafe key (D/A).
  14. To gain maximum distance when launching yourself off one ramp to the next, attempt to be at the highest point when leaving your initial ramp.
  15. Above all else, have fun while surfing. It can be difficult to learn at first, let alone master. With practice comes perfection though.
